What beauty school students majors don’t learn in school could fill volumes, and many of these are things, people are either born with or not. There are many skills, traits and characteristics that successful beauticians possess that simply can’t be taught in school. Some of these skills are developed over time as the beautician learns what he or she needs to do to be successful in "the biz." Others are traits and characteristics that are innate in certain individuals, making them predisposed for certain jobs.

What Beauty School Students Majors Don’t Learn in School

1. Communication Skills

Good beauticians listen to the wants and needs of their clients and try their best to give them what they want. They are also excellent communicators, so when a client asks for something that won’t work with their type of hair or won’t look good with their skin type, they can communicate this without being offensive. Beauticians should also be able to talk casually with their clients and build a good relationship with them. Many people enjoy visiting the salon to talk about what’s going on in their lives—or to forget about what’s going on in their lives! If you’re not friendly and considerate, you won’t make it far in this field.

2. Eye for Style

Some people always seem to look good, from their clothes and shoes to their hairstyle, accessories and makeup. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, or what your personal sense of style is, from preppy to punk. You either have an eye for style, or you don’t.

3. Gentle Hands

This one is pretty simple. If you’re too rough with your hands, people won’t want you working on their hair, doing their nails or applying their makeup. This is supposed to be a positive experience for the client, and if you cause them physical pain during the session, they will probably not return—or even give you a tip, for that matter.

4. Trend Tracker

If you’re going to be a successful beautician, you will need to be on the cutting edge of the latest trends in fashion and beauty, unless you’re looking for a career working with the elderly (which actually is a large niche that needs to be filled in the hair and beauty world). Hairstyles and makeup trends change just as clothing fads do, and if you’re still focused on styles that are "so 10 minutes ago," you’ll find yourself losing clients quickly.
